Places to see in Ellijay Georgia
The Annual Georgia Apple Festival is a must stop attraction in Ellijay
The Apple Festival! Ellijay is home to Georgia's famous Apple Festival. The festival hosts venders from all over northern Georgia selling their apple-baked goods, jerkies, smoothies, home décor. and so much more. This event is truly a family friendly small town carnival that is right out of a magazine. The festival is two weekends every October at the local fair grounds. Live music and dancing fill the stage as families gather around with their yummy treats in hand. Kids will enjoy the small petting zoo while moms smell all the handmade soaps and candles. Dad can grab a bag of apple spice kettle corn and enjoy the live bands and local schools having dance offs. The stage hosts a pie-eating contest and baked good competition. Felling fancy? Enter to win the crown for Miss Apple Festival! They also have an antique car show in the parking lot that kicks the festival off with a parade. All the cars are adorned with fall flair and candy throwers.
Crowds flock to the stands that are selling warm apple dumpling and ciders! They do offer other foods, such as hotdogs, turkey legs, and breads and of course fresh apples! I enjoyed an apple cider slushy while I was there last. Samples are at all most every stand, so come hungry. The air filled with the scent of apple fritter bread and caramel corn…. AHHHH, fall. This small town festival brings guests in by bus, park down town Ellijay where the festiveness continues. The town is filled with vendors: balloon artist, hayrides, food tours, carnival games and so much more. The town is decorated with scarecrows and pumpkins; this is truly my favorite time to visit. The whole town comes out to enjoy the autumn air; fall color leaves, dressed up kids and dogs, pumpkin displays and hay rides.
Want to know what to plan for your stop at the Apple Festival?
The parking is free, and if memory serves me correct, it is 5 dollars for adults and kids are free! The prices of the food is a fair deal, no big carnival pricing here. So bring the whole family for the day, you will not break the bank. That is to say, if you can stay away from all the craft vendors….. A live wood carver demonstrates his skills with hourly carving shows. He will even take special orders, I love the bear carvings. Most of the vendors have local shops, so finding all these treats are easy, even after the festival is over.
The feel of a County Fair back home
This small town festival packs a lot of family fun into fall. I would not miss the opportunity to enjoy local treats at great prices. Watch kids toss leaves, wood carvers turn wood into masterpieces and of course bring home the best, freshest apples you will ever try. Georgia State Apple Festival should be your next family trip. Do not forget to stock up on ciders and taffy as well. The grounds even have a spot where you can store your purchased goods as you enjoy the festival and grab one last apple dumpling!
Oh, I did not mention the cider and apple tasting bar in the back, filled with apples and ciders that fill the local farms? That way you can taste before you purchase, but try the pink lady, they are the best, well I think!
